The Priestess Is In
Spirited Woman: Day 10
Spirited Woman: Barb Legan
I’m Barbara Legan – I live in Sedona, AZ – land of the beautiful red rock canyons, mesas, and famous rock formations
I’m a Certified Reiki Master, Reiki Teacher, powerful distance healer, Mentor, published author, grief journey expert, called the Sedona Wise Woman
2. Do you have a tagline for your life?
“Never put a period where God has put a comma” – Gracie Allen
It’s all about choices … stop “shoulding” on yourself … make your choices from and for your heart and soul
3. You may or may not know, but the Sacred Village Website is about empowering people to take charge of making the world a better place. It’s also about forging connections. I believe that whatever we do, when we’re united in our pursuit of that goal, we do it better, more easily and have a lot more fun along the way. What are you doing to make the world safer, saner, healthier? And are you having fun while you’re doing it?
I’m an open door between the Universe and individuals who desire/need healing, holding the space for love, compassion, generosity and peace to enter – I’m helping others to look at grief from a new perspective – my intention is to help those who want it, to heal themselves ….. I enjoy what I do – I think that there are many who take healing way too seriously – a little touch of humor helps speed healing!
4. Tell me one great (short) story that you’ve observed where someone (maybe you) stepped up and made a difference. What did that inspire you to do?
1) Duane – believed that love was the only thing that mattered – he lived this daily – I saw his love change others and me – so, not being slouchy in the learning area, I learned what he taught by example and began practicing loving everyone myself – amazing how that shifted my personality, outlook, mindset and thus my circle of friends — big improvement!
2) Sinatra one of my most precious feline companions – who in his innocence, loyalty and unconditional lovingness determined he would protect his humans — I’m an animal lover, but my heart leans toward cats the most. From them I’ve learned to listen intently, speak up when I might not otherwise and live from my heart — Sinatra chased a fox that had invaded his/our territory in Tenn. Then he sat on a stump at the far end of our property – where the fox had disappeared] each of the following 5 days in order to protect everyone from the fox’s return! What a fierce, loyal cat he was! Ready to take on the world- that’s living with courage – and having courage means living from the heart.
5. What else do I need to know about either you or your thoughts or…
some thoughts to live by: have an open mind; be flexible; listen/hear; live from your heart; connect with others in a loving manner; Love is the answer.
6. Under which category can people find you in the directory? Healers ….. Health and Wellness
Things that Work: Wells
One of my favorite columns in the NYTimes online is one entitled Fixes. There are a variety of people working about things that work! This is exactly what the Priestess loves to hear and talk about!
This week’s article by Tina Rosenberg talks about wells in Africa. They’re a great idea which have huge impact on villages, particularly the women of the village who can be saved a walk of as much as 12 hours in a day to get water. That means girls go to school. It means they’re not out alone at risk of rape. Wells make a difference in raising the quality of living in the village.
But sadly, most of the programs that put wells in do nothing to keep wells in action. So the wells work until the pump dies and then village life is once again interrupted by the trek for water.
The same problems exist in Uttar Pradesh the most populous state in India. But there an organization entitled WaterAid (a British-based charity) is training local village mechanics male and female (a huge step that has been accepted only because the women are actually fixing the wells.). What makes this work in India is that the government is paying for the training program. That’s not going to work in Africa. There’s one more article on this topic. I’ll update the post when that happens. In the meantime, you can read the Fixes article here. In the meantime, if you wanted to make a holiday donation to WaterAid, they’d be happy to accept your help.
Spirited Woman: Day 9
Spirited Woman Day 8
Spirited Woman: Please meet Katy Leakey
- Please introduce yourself:
Jambo! I am Katy Leakey and I live in the bush of East Africa with my husband Philip Leakey, where we run a lifestyle company that provides opportunity for our Maasai neighbors, primarily women.
Who are you where do you live, what you do that made Nancy Mills suggest you join the Directory? Nancy has been such an avid supporter of what we do. She interviewed me and told our story to her audience many years ago. She has followed our journey and is an amazing woman herself.
2. Do you have a tagline for your life?
Make family and friends the center of your universe. This is what the Maasai women practice and it’s what they have taught one individual American woman who lives among them.
There is nothing like “making something from nothing”, as Philip always says. Not only is it gratifying to take a stalk of dried grass and turn it into the colorful, elegant jewelry Zulugrass™ that all women love to wear but to know that in designing such a piece you are also ensuring the survival of the wetlands is exciting! In every product we design we start with what is available in nature around us and wonder what we can create that will help ensure its preservation.
Philip and I live in tents in the Kenyan bush among the Maasai. We grow our own food, keep chickens and bring water from the river for bathing. We recycle all plastics and save everything, even empty toilet rolls, which become very handy candle makers. We have even used old newspapers to make a boat!
4. Tell me one great (short) story that you’ve observed where someone (maybe you) stepped up and made a difference. What did that inspire you to do?
Philip was giving a talk about Kenya at a Catholic Girls school in Monterey, California. Towards the end Philip asked if we could present some Zulugrass Jewelry to sell at the back of the room. Philip explained that we were running this small project to provide work for the Maasai women who had been impoverished due to the drought. We and two other volunteers stood as human T-stands; our arms loaded with Zulugrass single strands while 500 girls swarmed us buying over 2000 pieces in one hour. We knew instantly that we could turn this into a viable business for the women of Kenya.
5. What else do I need to know about either you or your thoughts or…I have always been interested in diverse cultures and have found that a woman in Kenya are no different then the woman in the West. They want to provide and nurture their families. They are even very business savvy. In less than 3 years after we created The Leakey Collection, the women came to me to ask for advise on how they could set-up a co-op for micro lending. Once I explained to them in an analogy they could understand, they developed this co-op and now lend out money to women who want to start their own business. I consider them my family and friends.
6. Under which category can people find you in the directory?
Katy is the Presenter in the Lifesyle Section.

Do I have fun doing it…oh boy YES! I’m such an avid believer in laughter being the best medicine and letting that inner child come out to play!
4. Tell me one great (short) story that you’ve observed where someone (maybe you) stepped up and made a difference. What did that inspire you to do?
A few years ago I worked with deaf and disabled adults with extreme challenging behaviours (or so they were labeled, but that’s another story!)
I loved my work and all of the people I shared my time with, they became such a big part of my life and taught me so much on a completely different level.
Anyway, while I was working in that job, I was also planning my wedding!
I shared the excitement with the ‘girls’ I was working with, these people were my friends and what do you do with your friends, you share your excitement!
I arranged a visit with a very understanding lady who owned bridal wear shop so my friends and I could go take a look and try on wedding dresses, it truly was a day to remember, and we all had so much fun!
We had a pre wedding party…oh we loved to party, it was just so magical to see the happiness, joy and excitement these people were experiencing.
Now, despite some very mixed reactions, I invited everyone who I worked with to my wedding.
It was amazing and so much fun; everyone had an amazing time, let me tell you it was such a gift to me to see them all so happy!
I have to admit to being a little shocked by the reaction of some of our other guests and their questions, such as, “Why are they dancing, they are deaf?” and “Why have you invited ‘those’ people to your wedding, they shouldn’t be out like this?”
I was horrified by the reaction, but let me tell you, by the end of the evening, everyone, and I mean even the most hardened of ‘doubters’ had change their minds!
Once I had explained to them a little about the frequencies and vibrations and just how much joy and happiness can make such a HUGE impact on everyone’s live, especially the ones who are shunned by society, labeled and hidden away.
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view – until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” spoken by Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird.
6. Under which category can people find you in the directory?

What a powerful little resource of inspired stories it is, it’s so much more than just a directory, and I feel so honoured to be a part of its launch.
loads of loVe
