The Peace of the Coming Dark

It’s so easy to see Autumn as a time of loss, trees lose their leaves, gardens lose their bounty, the sky loses its light.

And we gnash and moan and don’t see the gifts being given.

I’m as bad as anyone. WHAT????? No swimming outdoors???? It’s my favorite thing in the whole world. But really, I get to swim indoors, that’s pretty astounding.

The beauty of the dark is coming; but at the moment, we have the beauty of the places in between. In between the light and the dark. In between the warmth and the cold. In between this world and the next.

In between this president and the next. We have to show up now, and we have to show up then. This land was made for you and me and we’d better damned start acting like that. When I say you, I mean all my friends of color, all my women friends, all my queer friends, all my friends with disabilities — physical and mental, all my friends of every tradition, all my male friends, and all those people I have not yet had a chance to love all the people who have not yet had the, shall we say, opportunity to love me.

Here’s Life. Here’s Love. Here’s Peace. All in the places in between.

Peace in the Soup Pot

The weather was doing its fall best for a while, and then boom, it’s back to summer weather, or will be if the cloud cover disappears. Just for a few days, enough to confuse us!

But our taste buds were happy to change directions. mmmm winter soups! Squashes, fruits, onions, cheeses. Okay, I made the cheese thing up, but I like cheese in my soups! Maybe not this one, but some soups! Nothing could be finer.

One way or the other though, I tastebuds accept the Peace offering. Soup is good food!

The sweetest of Autumn to you, my friends, and I wish you the Peace of the soup pot!

Autumn Views of Peace

Autumn is coming. The question around here is whether or not it will come in wild color since we’re in the middle of a drought. In that case the trees preserve their energy and settle down for the winter, dropping their leaves early in the season.

One way or the other, fall will be beautiful here. There will be gorgeous, crisp, clear days and we will rejoice (while kvetching about the fact that the days are shorter). There will be chilly nights to huddle under blankets and sleep deeply. There may well be, as the equinox implies: some balance.

And beauty. There is always beauty. Scott, the photographer, lives a block from where I grew up. His snaps out the back window always bring sweet memories. We live alongside a beautiful river! Both branches of it! Wishing you all the Peace of the Autumn Valley.

Rain the Rain of Peace!

In the last three days we’ve gotten 1 3/4″ of rain. When you’re down by almost 10 inches, that’s a huge blessing. The earth is so thirsty.

There’s more due this evening — Just a little. Just a chance. But perhaps.

And there are rainy day activities to undertake. Reading in bed in the morning is one. And changing out the Summer clothes for those more appropriate to the chill. I’m not entirely happy the warm weather is gone… but everyone had closed their pools anyway. Nothing left to do but join the gym and start the early morning swimming. Which I did.

But the Earth rejoices and we rejoice with her. Blessed be the Autumn rains. Blessed be the Peace they bring.

Into the Woods for Peace

We take the beauty of our woods for granted. And then we see another forest, equally beautiful, and remember how beautiful our forest is.

I don’t get out enough. Every time I”m out, I realize… look… look what you’re missing.

The world is so beautiful.

If we don’t get out to treasure it. We won’t notice as its beauty disappears. Its future beauty is on us.

There’s Peace in the woods in Autumn —Each season has its own Peace Let us go out to the woods and find it.
